CHAPTER TEN:

Earth’s echo

(Ark Four)

“No way!”

Leon’s shocked declaration echoed his own disbelief. They’d traveled the twenty light-years to where the electrical signal was disrupted only to be confronted by a big blue planet. The familiar contours of the landmasses surrounded by deep blue seas was only interrupted by drifting white clouds. This was Earth, but it shouldn’t be. Although he knew it couldn’t be their home planet, he felt drawn towards it. Seeing the rich blue with its sprinkling of white and uneven brown patches reminded him how far they were from home. For the first time since he’d left CaliTech to explore other galaxies, he felt lost in a cold universe that didn’t care what happened to him. He supposed this was how Dunk Four felt all the time. No man did well alone, so it was little wonder his brother wasn’t happy.

Dunk Four was on the Bridge of the rig behind their Scorpions at what he hoped was a safe distance from the Earth-like planet. “Dunk? Any ideas.”

Chyann had worked with Dunk Four sharing their weapons. Integrating Machan capabilities into the visibility pods meant they could now read sound waves. Chyann and her people were proving to be cooperative allies for which he was grateful. In a region of space where nothing was making any sense, he didn’t think they could deal with one more problem.

“It looks like Earth, but logically it can’t be. Dunk Two wasn’t in my cabin that night and this isn’t Earth either.”

“Is it a mirage like ugly baby was?” Leon asked.

Their Scorpions were traveling side-by-side ready to break through the atmosphere. All he had to do was give the order and twenty assault ships would drive their way to the ground. Had the planet looked any different he wouldn’t have hesitated, but finding a replica of their home planet bothered him in a way he couldn’t explain. Whoever the enemy were they knew far too much about them. It was a one-sided knowledge leaving them at a disadvantage. His father, Ark Three, would have told him to look for the leak, but he knew there hadn’t been one. It seemed they’d accidentally given their enemy intel about themselves and he suspected it was his fault. Had they studied him when they’d taken him hostage? What other secrets had he unwillingly betrayed?

“Not a mirage,” Dunk Four replied. “It’s as real as the space station was.”

“We should do a flyover,” he said.

“How many Scorpions?” Dunk Four asked.

It was a good question and not one Dunk Four would have asked in the past. Sounding confident, Leon replied, “All twenty of them. If there’s a problem then you can bug out with the rig.”

“And not save you?” Dunk Four asked sarcastically.

“Don’t put the rig at risk.”

Snorting in disgust, Dunk Four replied, “I’m not leaving you behind.”

Twenty Scorpions burned through the atmosphere and then began dropping towards the ground. Assuming the planet was identical to Earth then the first place he wanted to find was home. “Head to CaliTech.”

“That’s where I was going,” Leon replied.
